Amendment to the Faculty Handbook
Committee on Academic Standing Membership Statement

The Faculty Executive Committee (FEC) moves that the membership statement for the Committee on Academic Standing (Part Two, Article II, Section F, number 13) be amended as follows:

CURRENT LANGUAGE:

13. COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC STANDING (CAS) - Appointed

Membership: Three faculty members, at least one tenured and none of whom may be a member of the CAFR, appointed to serve three-year terms; the Dean of Studies or the Associate Director of the Dean of Studies, the Registrar, and two students selected by SGA, one junior to be appointed each year to serve a two-year term.

NEW LANGUAGE:

13. COMMITTEE ON ACADEMIC STANDING (CAS) - Appointed

Membership: Three faculty members, at least one tenured and none of whom may be a member of the CAFR, appointed to serve three-year terms; the Dean of Studies or the Associate Director of the Dean of Studies his/her designated representative, the Registrar and Director of Institutional Research or his/her designated representative, and two students selected by SGA, one junior to be appointed each year to serve a two-year term.

RATIONALE:

With respect to the changes in membership from the Dean of Studies Office, the position of Associate Director of the Dean of Studies no longer exists.  The newly proposed language will allow the Dean of Studies to appoint a representative to CAS meetings (in instances when the Dean of Studies is not personally able to attend CAS meetings).

With respect to the changes in membership from the Office of the Registrar, changes in the Registrar’s title – the addition of the title “Director of Institutional Research” – need to be reflected in the CAS definition.  Moreover, the committee elected to add language that would allow the Registrar and Director of Institutional Research the same flexibility in appointing a representative to CAS as is afforded to the Dean of Studies.
