Dr. John Anzalone's Lecture, "Telling the Great War in Pictures," a Luncheon, and Tour with Olga Hirshhorn

Date: Friday, January 23, 2009; 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Where: Philharmonic Center for the Arts (Lecture to be held in the Toni Stabile Building) 5833 Pelican Bay Boulevard, Naples, FL 34108-2740

Cost: $28 per person (includes lecture at 11:00, lunch at 12:00, and tour at 1:00)

Join Skidmore Professor, Dr. John Anzalone, for an intriguing lecture about the Great War. Dr. Anzalone is Professor of French and Director of the Master of Arts in the Liberal Studies Program. As we approach the centennial of the Great War, new questions continue to arise concerning the cultural implications of the conflict. This illustrated lecture will look at how graphic arts in France, in particular book illustration and plate portfolios, both reflect and inflect the awareness and attitudes of contemporaries concerning the First World War. We will examine propaganda and fashion illustrations, the way in which children were targets of the war, and how the length of the war was depicted in such ordinary objects as children's books and calendars.

Immediately after Professor Anzalone?s lecture in the Toni Stabile Building, join fellow Skidmore alumni and friends in "The Dome" for lunch. Following lunch, Olga Hirshhorn will offer a tour of her special exhibition, "The Mouse House: Works from the Olga Hirshhorn Collection." The exhibition is one of the most popular at the Naples Museum of Art, with Olga's collection featuring works from artists such as Picasso, Dali, Man Ray, Giacometti, Calder, de Kooning and many other great 20th-century artists. Don't miss out on this great event! To RSVP or for questions, please contact the Office of Alumni Affairs and College Events at 518-580-5610.
