Anthropology is the study of human cultures throughout the world and throughout time. The mission of Skidmore's anthropology program is to facilitate the crosscultural study of human groups and social behavior. The program's curriculum includes archaeological explorations of past cultures, studies of human biocultural development, and examinations of diverse lifeways of the world's populations with a particular emphasis on the peoples and cultures of Native North America, Latin America, East Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa. Our courses are designed for students with a general interest in anthropology as well as students planning to pursue a graduate degree. Our courses complement a wide range of programs that are part of a liberal arts curriculum and count toward the Anthropology major and minor and the Sociology-Anthropology major as well as degree programs in American Studies, Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, International Affairs, Latin American Studies, and Women's Studies. A degree in anthropology can prepare a student for a number of professional activities related to international affairs, medicine and public health, environmental protection, social service, education, museums, and historic preservation.
