Major Requirements Checklist



Anthropology Major Requirements

Students are required to declare anthropology as a major before registering for classes for the fall of the junior year. If students plan to add anthropology as a second major, we also encourage them to do before registering for classes for the fall of the junior year. None of the required courses or any 300-level anthropology course—except AN-399 —fulfilling the major may be taken on an S/U basis.

Total Credits:

__ 32 credits in Anthropology

1. Introduction and Exploration:

a. Introduction

__ AN-101 (3 or 4 credits)

__ AN-102 (3 or 4 credits)

b. Exploration

__ At least one geographic-area course: AN-205, 207, 227, 229, 244; AN-252 may also count when applicable (3 credits)

2. Foundation:  

__ Theory: AN-270 (4 credits)

__ Research Methods: AN-280 or a 200-level archaeological field methods course (3 to 4 credits)

3. Application and Synthesis:

__ Senior seminar: AN366 (4 credits)

__ Two additional 300-level courses totaling at least 6 credits.

4. Electives:

__ Additional credit at any level as necessary to complete the required 32 credits for the major. To fulfill college maturity-level requirements, at least six credits of 300-level anthropology courses must be taken in the senior year.

5. Writing requirement in the major:

__ AN 366 (4 credits)
