Arts Facilities

Art Studios

The Department of Art seeks to introduce and develop in all of its students the intellectual, creative, perceptual and technical abilities which are appropriate to the making of art, and the ability to evaluate, judge and appreciate which is appropriate to the understanding of works of art.  The department offers a number of studio spaces to students in the arts, including:

Arthur Zankel Music Center

Construction is now well under way for the Zankel Music Center, a 54,000 sq. ft. facility with a beautiful 600-seat recital hall, ample spaces for instruction, rehearsal, and individual student practice, study, and creative work. We hope to be open for classes in the spring of 2010.   The firm of Ewing,Cole designed the building, and already won an architectural award.

Case Gallery

Case Gallery is a completely student run gallery in Case Student Center. Dedicated to showing student work, the gallery shows art in all mediums. First semester is generally devoted to student curated group shows and installations. These exhibitions have ranged from more tradtional presentations of painting and sculpture, to interactive installations, video work and performance. Exhibitions have also been mounted by non-art students and have included shows dedicated to cultural heritage. Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit applications to curate a show. Second semester is generally devoted to work by senior art majors.

Dance Center

The Dance Center adjoins the Sports and Recreation Center. It consists of three units including two spacious dance studios; a large dance, sport, and recreational area; and the fully equipped Dance Theater with adjoining dressing rooms. This is the center for dance activities during the academic year. The Dance Theater also hosts visiting professional dance companies throughout the year.

Falstaff’s

Opened in 1986, this one-story facility contains small alcoves for eating and relaxation and a large open area for dancing and entertainment. A committee of students, faculty, and administrators sets policy for Falstaff's and sponsors a variety of cocurricular activities.

Filene Recital Hall

The Filene Recital Hall is an intimate, 240-seat hall which offers concerts by Skidmore students, faculty, and ensembles, as well as a roster of world renowned performers who appear under the Filene Concert Series and the Sterne Virtuoso Series.

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery

The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College is sited dramatically on Skidmore's scenic campus. The Tang's designation as a "teaching museum" signals Skidmore's intent to make Tang exhibitions, collection, and programs a significant aspect of the Skidmore education. Tang Museum exhibitions feature contemporary art, but regularly address other disciplines, including the natural and social sciences, performing arts and humanities. Tang public events and education programs serve both the college and audiences of all ages from the Capital District and beyond.

Janet Kinghorn Bernhard Theater Building

The JKB Theater Building houses several different theater venues, including the main Bernhard Theater, the Black Box (Studio) theater, rehearsal studios, scene and paint shops, green room, dressing rooms, costume area, property storage, design studio, offices, lobby and lounge.

Saisselin Art Center

The Saisselin Art building is the base for most of the studio arts courses and their related work spaces. It includes special rooms for painting, sculpture, jewelry, ceramics, photography, and computer modeling. The main floor includes the Schick Art Gallery, an exhibition space for traveling shows and exhibitions of works by the Art faculty and students.

Schick Art Gallery

The Schick Art Gallery offers students, the college community and the public an opportunity to study significant contemporary exhibitions that compliment the Studio Art curriculum. Art from museums, galleries, private collections and artists is borrowed for exhibitions that address a wide range of disciplines and are often accompanied by catalogues, gallery lectures and discussions. In addition, there is an annual art faculty and juried Skidmore student exhibition. For thirty years the Schick Art Gallery has played an integral role as a teaching lab in the Department of Art to fully educate students in the visual arts and creative process.
