Tabula Rasa - Art Installation Program

Art is an attitude - thinking, playing with ideas, extending one’s senses, experimentation, making mistakes - which allows creativity to take physical shape. It includes both the making of the “object” and the critical evaluation of how well that object (idea) has been expressed.Pre-O 08 081

This project will be firmly rooted in the experience of making; in the process, not just the product. It does not require that the participants be prospective studio art majors; creative impulses of all kinds will benefit this experience. We will depend more on developing interpretations of a given theme, organization of ideas, and problem solving than on “talent” or “skill”. We will ask you to work in small groups with limited materials, (some traditional, some not) that may require you to see possibilities you haven’t before considered.

We will begin with an introduction of the theme of the project (looking at examples of work by like-minded artists) and look at the site on campus where your projects will be executed. Then we will discuss possibilities - group brainstorm, sketch out ideas, review practical considerations, confront questions, refine concepts, etc. Ultimately you will create a tangible piece which will be evidence of your endeavors and energies.

Though no prior formal art making experience is necessary, imagination, open-mindedness, cooperative energy, humor, critical skills, flexibility, and a willingness to articulate ideas will be essential.

Register for Tabula Rasa here starting in the Spring of 2010!
