Sustainable Farming & Forestry Service ProjectAre you interested in sustainable living? Would you like to camp in a spectacular Vermont landscape while getting to know your fellow newbies? The Sustainable Farming & Forestry Service Program is open to all first-year Skidmore students, but participants should come prepared to engage in physical, outdoor activities, various social activities, and discussions (around the campfire) regarding sustainable approaches to living. You will spend 2 days and 2 nights camping, working and hiking at the Merck Forest Center - a 3,100 acre preserve in Rupert, Vermont whose mission is to teach and demonstrate the benefits of innovative, sustainable management of forest and farmland through a variety of educational outlets including organic gardens, alternative energy sources, farm animals, a variety of logging plots, and over 28 miles of hiking trails. The program is led by two Environmental Studies faculty members and up to 3 upper-class students. In the past students have engaged in active and fun service-learning projects such as harvesting potatoes, picking garlic, gathering eggs, taking inventories of salamanders, collecting data on forest regeneration, clearing trails, and much more. Past students have remarked on how much they enjoyed actually getting to work in the woods and on the farm! They also enjoy the nature walks with the faculty to explore the native species and unique geology of the area. This trip is a great way to meet new friends and learn about the environment! |
