Skidmore Commencement '06

May 16-17, 2008

Dear Seniors and Guests of the Class of 2008:

I look forward to welcoming you, on behalf of the Skidmore College community, to the 97th Commencement Exercises on Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center.

We hope that when you read the accompanying schedule of activities for Commencement Weekend, you will be as full of anticipation as we are.  Marie and I especially look forward to your joining us for a reception late Friday afternoon at historic Scribner House, the former home of our College’s founder, Lucy Skidmore Scribner.

We are very proud to announce that at this year’s Commencement ceremony, Skidmore will confer honorary degrees upon three exceptional individuals:

  • Ruth J. Colvin – Founder of Literacy Volunteers of America, a national volunteer adult literacy organization; dedicated educator, speaker, and author on the subject of teaching adults to read and write

  • Rita R. Colwell – former director of the National Science Foundation; Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health; and Senior Advisor and Chairman Emeritus, Canon U.S. Life Sciences

  • Bill T. Jones – world-renowned dancer and choreographer and co-founder and artistic director of the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company.

Each of our distinguished guests will briefly address the graduating class.  Suzanne Corbet Thomas '62, chair of the board of trustees; Kathryn A. Caulfield,  president of the Class of 2008; and I also will offer our congratulations.

The entire Skidmore community joins me in expressing our great pride in the accomplishments of the Class of 2008.  We look forward to celebrating with you in May.

Sincerely,

Philip A. Glotzbach
President
