The Skidmore in Spain programs in Alcalá and Madrid are run in conjunction with Tufts University and are offered for the fall or spring semesters in Alcalá and for the full year or spring semester in Madrid. These challenging programs are designed for students with an advanced knowledge of Spanish and strive to integrate students into the life of Alcalá or Madrid through courses at the University of Alcalá de Henares (UAH) or the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), the experience of a family stay, and an emphasis on involvement in the cultural and social life of Alcalá or Madrid.

Iraq: A Civil War Averted, or Interrupted?
Time: 8:00 PM- 10:00 PM

Location: Case Center: Faculty Staff Club

How did the US invasion of Iraq bring the country to the brink of civil war? As US troops withdraw, will the country continue to stabilize, or will it slide back into full-scale communal violence? This talk will investigate the causes of the 2004-2007 sectarian conflict, the new strategies chosen by both Iraqi political movements and by the US military which led to a reduction in the bloodshed, and prospects for the future.

Steve Negus has covered Iraq since September 2004 for "The Financial Times" and "The Economist", both of London. From Nov. 2003 - Aug. 2004, he was a Trainer/Editor for the Institute for War & Peace Reporting in Baghdad. Prior to his work in Iraq he worked in the Cairo Bureau as a reporter for "Agence France-Presse"; as a regular correspondent for "Middle East International, London"; as Editor at the "Cairo Times, Cairo" and News Editor/Deputy Editor for "Middle East Times, Cairo". This past year he was a Fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, conducting research on the Sunni insurgency in three localities in Iraq.

Fulbright grants offer opportunities for either graduate study or teaching assistantships in foreign countries following graduation. Prof. Maria Lander will discuss how to apply, the eligibility requirements, and examples of Skidmore students who have received grants in the past.

  "Peace Through My Eyes," Davis Projects for Peace Presentation

Elana Hazghia '10 will present on her co-project with Verena Bunge '11 in Guatemala during the summer of 2009 made possible with the help of a $10,000 grant from the Kathryn Wasserman Davis 100 Projects for Peace Foundation. The project created art and photography programs teaching students basic skills that culminated in four photo exhibitions in Guatemala and the United States.

Location: Tang Teaching Museum: Winter Gallery

This student-curated exhibition draws on the Tang?s rich collection of African ceramic pots to explore their shapes, decorated surfaces, meanings, functions and modes of production as expressions of gender in African cultures. Reflecting the fact that their creators and users viewed these pots as more than just functional containers, the exhibition will show how these compelling clay forms extend women?s and men?s social, economic, and ritual spheres, serving as metaphors of the body and as symbols of power for the ever-powerful deity, Mami Wata. Pots and Gender in Africa is created by students working with art history professor Lisa Aronson in her fall 2009 course, "Topics in Gender and Visual Culture: Africa."
