Julia Routbort, Ph.D., Director |

Julia Routbort is the Director of the Counseling Center. She has a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Michigan, where she completed both the child and adult clinical training programs. Her clinical interests include the treatment of trauma, particularly the treatment of child sexual abuse and sexual assault, feminist psychodynamic therapy and work with LGBT issues. She enjoys interacting with many parts of the Skidmore community, including students, faculty, parents and administrators. She believes that good therapy happens when the therapist and client create an egalitarian and collaborative relationship based on mutual respect and trust. |

Andrew Demaree, Psy.D., Associate Director |

Andy came to Skidmore in the Fall of 2000 after completing his Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. He previously worked in the Counseling Centers at IUP and the University of Delaware. Andy enjoys both group and individual therapy and believes creating and maintaining healthy relationships is one of the most important challenges for college students. Andy is also the coordinator of practicum training for the center. |
Katrina Smith, Psy. D., Staff Psychologist

Katrina Smith is a Staff Psychologist at the Counseling Center. She came to Skidmore after several years at the Counseling Center at Western Connecticut State University. She has a Psy.D. in clinical psychology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, in Indiana, PA, where she also worked in the Counseling Center. While she enjoys working with a wide range of student concerns, Katrina’s specific clinical interests include collaborating with students to address issues of identity development and adjustment to college, as well as with those students experiencing long-standing interpersonal difficulties. Katrina believes that therapy is at its best when the therapist facilitates and enhances the student’s existing abilities to resolve stressors. |
Amy Mitchell, Psy.D., Staff Psychologist

Amy Mitchell is a staff psychologist at the counseling center who came to Skidmore after graduating with her doctorate in clinical psychology from the Institute of Graduate Psychology at Widener University. While there, Amy also completed the school psychology and psychodynamic concentration programs. She has worked as a graduate student in a variety of settings including Swarthmore College’s Counseling and Psychological Services. Amy’s clinical interests include working with relational issues, eating disorders, and anxiety. She believes in creating a safe environment in which students can explore and understand their relationships, behaviors, and current stressors in a collaborative way. |
Brett Swords, B.S., Practicum Student

Brett is a doctoral student in the Counseling Psychology program at the University at Albany and holds a Bachelor’s degree in psychology from York College of Pennsylvania. Brett came to Skidmore in the fall of 2009 and will remain at the counseling center until the end of the school-year. He enjoys working with people with a wide range of concerns but is especially interested in anxiety and interpersonal relationships. Brett believes very strongly in forming a collaborative relationship with each client; he believes therapy is most effective when client and therapist are able to be comfortable with one another and work toward a set of mutually agreed upon goals. Brett is very excited to be at Skidmore and looks forward to working with many different students in the Skidmore community. |
Lilly Routledge, Staff Assistant

Lilly is the Staff Assistant at the Counseling Center. She has an A.S. in Office Management from Dean College. Lilly brings to the center her experience as an Office Coordinator in the Case Management department and as an inpatient Behavioral Health Tech from the Glens Falls Hospital. She enjoys assisting and interacting with students as they begin or continue their academic experience at Skidmore.

Gary Oberg, M.D., Consulting Psychiatrist

Dr. Oberg was educated at RPI and Albany Med. He served for 7 years as Medical Director on the Crisis and Emergency Services for Capital District Psychiatric Center. He maintains a private practice and is full-time staff psychiatrist at Saratoga County Mental Health Clinic. "I love this job—we take people who are basically pretty strong and healthy, give them some help and for the most part, they get a lot better and go about their business with confidence and success. What could be better?" |
