The Education Club
The Education Club is a newly chartered club that helps those interested in Education to gain a greater understanding of what the field has to offer. The club works closely with the Education Department, using Education classes as a catalyst to create discussion as well as a way to bring forth ideas for Books Club books, speakers, and field trips.
The club has a strong belief that it is important for future teachers to stay connected with their own education in order to educate others as well as to gain a firm understanding of their educational creeds. Learning is a lifelong process and the club gives members an understanding of how to continue that process after entering into the working world.
The club was created in the Spring of ’06 and has been growing and prospering since then. The events that the club has taken part in have been ones that reach out to the local and greater communities of children as well as informational events for the Skidmore community.
To become involved in our club, please send an email to Meghan Hurley '12 (mhurley@skidmore.edu) or to Elizabeth Warren '12 (ewarren@skidmore.edu). A student does not have to be an Education major to join. Anyone interested in helping children to grow and learn in a hands on as well as discussion oriented way is more than welcome to attend meetings.
Spring ’06
The Education Club took a field trip to the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA to hear a lecture on how teachers can use picture books as art forms with their students. As we ‘walked’ through “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See” by, Eric Carle, we were given many ideas for how to approach literacy in the classroom.
Fall ’06
The Education Club had a chance to work with other clubs on campus to add a new element to the annual Scrib-or-Treat event at Halloween. The members of the club had a party for the children of the community where they were able to partake in activities such as face painting, arts and crafts, and read-alouds. It was a great success and will become an annual addition to the event.
Spring ’07
The Education Department and Club worked together to bring 30 7th and 8th grade students from PS/IS 66 in Brooklyn to the Skidmore Campus for an overnight stay to see what college has to offer. They attended three classes with Skidmore students, toured the campus, stayed in the campus apartments, and met with Admissions, HEOP, and many of the clubs on campus. This two day event helped the students to understand that they can make it to college no matter what their background may be and that they can and will succeed in the college environment. It was a life-changing experience for many of these students as well as for the faculty and Skidmore students involved. (See the main Education Department page for photos)
Spring ’07
The Education Club, having been chartered in the Spring of ’07, decided that bringing a speaker to campus for the whole Skidmore community to attend would be a great way to let students know about the club and that they were welcome to join us whether they were Education majors or not. The speaker the club invited was Megan Lambert of the Eric Carle Museum. She presented a lecture on Dr. Seuss and his many works titled, “Silly, Subversive, Serious Stuff: The Work of Dr. Seuss.” Bringing a speaker to the Skidmore campus will be a yearly event to invite the Skidmore community to join us in the Education Club.
