Hope G. Casto joined the Skidmore Education Department in 2010 from her Doctoral program at Cornell University.  Her dissertation titled "School-Community Connections: Bridging the Institutional and Community Contexts" describes school-community partnerships in rural communities across New York State.  Hope is committed to place-based education as an important link between school achievement and community development efforts.  The study of place is a thread in Hope's work that began in her undergraduate work, continued through her graduate work, and which she continues to research.

Hope completed a Masters of Science degree at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland with a thesis comparing the school closure policies in Midlothian, Scotland to those in West Virginia, her home state.  Hope also completed a Masters of Arts at the University of Virginia in Social Foundations of Education.  Prior to and while pursuing her degree at UVA, Hope taught elementary school at The Free Union Country School.  Hope graduated from Haverford College with a degree in History of Art and a concentration in Education.  She continues to be committed to interdisciplinary work like her undergraduate work combining art history with educational studies.
