The Archaeology of Ancient Greek Music
Location: Palamountain Hall: Davis Auditorium
Date: 11/08/2011
Time: 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Speaker: Professor John Franklin
Description:
How did the music of ancient Greece sound? When and where did the Greeks hear music? What instruments did they play?
Join ancient ethnomusicologist John C. Franklin (University of Vermont) for the answers to these and other questions. Professor Franklin will offer a visual and audio survey of Greek music, both its technology and its social functions, from the age of Homer down to the Hellenistic era.
Professor Franklin is Associate Professor of Classics at the University of Vermont. His research interests include music archeology and archeoacoustics; song culture and oral tradition; Old, New, and Roman Comedy with reception; performance criticism; and music technology. He has reconstructed and recorded scores for plays by Aristophanes, and he served as narrator of and academic advisor/musical contributor to a three-part series on Greek music for ArtsEdge, a program of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
