Lecture: "Stereotype Threat and its implications for Colleges and College Students"

Location: Palamountain Hall: Gannett Audtitorium

Date: 11/05/2012

Time: 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Speaker: Joshua Aronson

Description:
Joshua Aronson, associate professor of applied psychology at New York University, is a renowned scholar on "stereotype threat," a term coined by Claude Steele (Stanford University) and Aronson, in 1995. In their pivotal study, Steele and Aronson reveal how race and gender stereotypes can harm academic performance. They also find that the achievement gap can be significantly reduced by minimizing stereotype threat. Aronson's most recent work is focused on developing practical interventions that educators can use to mitigate the negative effects to stereotype threat.
