"Diversity is a Process, Not an End" Lecture with Leroy Nesbitt
Location: Palamountain Hall: Gannett Auditorium
Date: 11/11/2009
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Speaker: Leroy Nesbitt
Description:
Leroy Nesbitt, Senior Advisor for Institutional Diversity at Middlebury College, has worked in the education arena as a professor, lawyer, administrator, program designer and consultant. As Raices' keynote speaker for Latino Heritage month, Nesbitt will speak about diversity and inclusion as a movement, not a moment. College graduates in the 21st Century are heirs to a unique set of possibilities that will redefine perceptions about identity and diversity. Affirmative action and multiculturalism has provided a platform for participation and expression by groups previously sidelined. As the dominance of groups fades and shifts, new paradigms will be needed to advance equity and inclusion. Moreover our global community has promoted migration and cross cultural exchange changing notions of identity and community. Taking advantage of the possibilities requires thinking differently about community and the obligations and expectations of community members. Taking advantage of the possibilities requires building a sense of shared community when individuals maintain cross multiple close and active ties based upon class, race, geography, religion, ethnicity and sexual orientation. Taking advantage of the possibilities requires a meaningful redefinition of values, identity and tribe.
