Pots and Gender in Africa
Location: Tang Teaching Museum: Winter Gallery
Date:
11/13/2009 - 01/04/2010
Description:
This student-curated exhibition draws on the Tang’s rich collection of African ceramic pots to explore their shapes, decorated surfaces, meanings, functions and modes of production as expressions of gender in African cultures. Reflecting the fact that their creators and users viewed these pots as more than just functional containers, the exhibition will show how these compelling clay forms extend women’s and men’s social, economic, and ritual spheres, serving as metaphors of the body and as symbols of power for the ever-powerful deity, Mami Wata. Pots and Gender in Africa is created by students working with art history professor Lisa Aronson in her fall 2009 course, "Topics in Gender and Visual Culture: Africa."
