Annual Classical World Lecture: : Mind-Reading in Homer's Odyssey
Location: Palamountain Hall: Emerson Auditorium
Date: 02/15/2010
Time: 5:30 PM - 6:30 PM
Speaker: Prof. Ruth Scodel
Description:
People are constantly thinking about what other people think, feel, and believe. Homer delights in representing interactions in which characters can avoid saying exactly what they mean because they know that their interlocutors know what they are thinking about. How Homer shows the everyday mind-reading of his characters and exploits the mind-reading habits of his audience can tell us a great deal about the psychology of Homer's world.
