Climate Change, Human Rights and Forced Migration
Location: Palamountain Hall: Gannet Auditorium
Date: 02/04/2010
Time: 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Speaker: Jennifer Redfearn
Description:
Fifty miles off the coast of Papua New Guinea, a remote island community is preparing to leave their ancestral homeland. The Carteret Islanders are among some of the world’s first environmental refugees. Small island communities like the Carterets stand at the front lines of climate change. Rising seas contaminate their fresh water and gardening land, erode the shoreline and contribute to severe and often devastating weather. As their beloved homeland disappears into the sea, the Carteret Islanders will lose their connection to their culture, history, and close community.
Producer/Director Jennifer Redfearn spent two months with the Carteret Islanders as they searched for a new place to call home on higher ground. Ms. Redfearn will present the story of the Carteret Islanders through Google Earth, video footage from her upcoming documentary Sun Come Up, and a first hand account of one of the first community-wide evacuations due to climate change. More information about the project can be found online: www.SunComeUp.com
Jennifer Redfearn is a New York-based director, producer, and writer. She has worked on programming for PBS, the Discovery Channel, TLC, and independent productions. Jennifer is currently directing Sun Come Up, an independent documentary following the relocation of some of the world’s first environmental refugees. Prior to this, she co-produced a two-hour special for WGBH/NOVA, and she produced a medical series for Discovery. Jennifer comes to documentary filmmaking with a background in environmental and research science. She has conducted research at the world’s premiere tropical research station in Costa Rica and the world’s second largest coral reef in Belize. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies from Wellesley College and a Master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University.
