CRUDE: The Real Price of Oil
Location: Palamountain Hall: Emerson
Date: 03/23/2010
Time: 7:00 PM
Description:
Beginning in the 60's, Chevron Texaco began an expansive drilling project in northeast Ecuador on the ancestral lands of local indigenous groups. They left behind 917 toxic oil waste pits and dumped or spilled 18 billion gallons of oil into the Amazon Rainforest - the equivalent of 30 Exxon-Valdez oil tanker spills. The result has been severe environmental contamination, of food, water and shelter as well as extremely high rates of cancer, birth defects, and other health issues.
"Crude: The Real Price of Oil" documents the ongoing lawsuit filed against Chevron on behalf of the 30,000 Amazon residents seeking justice as Chevron attempts to evade accountability. With potential damages assessed at over $27 billion, this could be the largest environmental lawsuit in history.
This film has already won numerous awards and was part of the 2009 Sundance Film Festival.
There will be an informal discussion following the screening and snacks will be provided!
Bring your friends, possibly some money to donate to the Clean Up Ecuador Campaign, and check out www.chevrontoxico.com for more information about Chevron and the pollution of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
