
Students majoring in French fulfill the departmental requirements by completing a minimum of nine courses totaling not less than thirty credit hours, including FF 208 and FF 210; one course covering material prior to 1800 from among FF 213, FF 214, FF 216, FF 224; one course covering material after 1800 from FF 219, FF 221, FF 223; Senior Seminar, FF 376; two additional French courses above FF203; and two additional French courses at the 300 level. Students will fulfill the writing requirement in the French major by successfully completing FF 208, 210 and 376.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES AND LITERATURE WRITING IN THE MAJOR REQUIREMENT: Students majoring in French, German, and Spanish will demonstrate an advanced level of proficiency in writing (“Advanced Plus” on the ACTFL scale). Foreign Languages and Literatures majors will develop the ability to write in the target language in a range of genres including writing for academic, social, and professional contexts in such forms as letters, reports, and research papers for purposes of description, narration, and analysis. FLL majors will demonstrate in writing the ability to perform a close reading of a literary or cultural text including explication of relevant rhetorical features, structural elements, and historical and cultural references. Through writing assignments students learn how to develop a thesis, provide textual evidence, present logical arguments, and employ appropriate theoretical lenses.
