Forms and Applications
The Department of Government was a pioneer in establishing internships at Skidmore and works closely with the Office of Career Services and with the Alumni Affairs Office to expand opportunities for students. Experiences range from the local to the international scene and include:
- NEW: THE LEVINE INTERSHIP AWARDS IN AMERICAN GOVERNMENT, POLITICS, AND LAW
The Levine Internship Awards are offered on a competitive basis to support Skidmore students who wish to undertake Government Department internships in fields related to the practice of American government, politics and/or law. Skidmore students from any major or minor may apply. Fall and spring semester awards are $1,000 cash stipends, summer award is a $2,500 cash stipend.
- THE WASHINGTON SEMESTER PROGRAM
Each year several juniors or seniors are selected to attend a one-semester program in Washington, where they attend seminars and classes at American University, hold internships at various congressional and agency offices, complete a major independent project, and receive academic credit for a full semester of courses.
- NEW YORK STATE INTERNSHIPS
Students arrange individual internships for one semester in the state legislature in Albany, where they receive academic credit for one or more courses.
- LOCAL INTERNSHIPS
in city government in Saratoga, at the county level (in the District Attorney's Office, for example), or in local law firms. Usually such internships carry credit for one course.
- NEW YORK STATE ASSEMBLY and SENATE
Competitive positions for Spring semester, with October 31 deadline for the Senate and November 3 deadline for the Assembly program. Applications and information are available from Professor Witt.
These experiences allow students to work with professionals, to gain an understanding of the political or legal process, and to see first-hand what a profession entails.
Other activities involving students
Government majors are involved in many activities at Skidmore, including the Student Government association, the newspaper, and the radio station. Students interested in international affairs have their own club and sponsor several speakers or a conference each year. In addition, moot court is an important aspect of some law courses.
Each year student delegates attend conferences at West Point, the Air Force Academy, and other academic institutions, and Skidmore groups participate in simulations such as the National Model United Nations in New York City and the National Model European Union.
Many students spend a semester or a year away from Skidmore, either on a Skidmore program such as those in Paris or Madrid, or through other colleges with programs throughout the world. Recent majors have studies in such places as England, France, Spain, Germany, Australia, India, and China.
