Anxiety

Anxiety is defined as a feeling of apprehension and dread, with or without a known cause, which may range from mild to severe and may be accompanied by physical symptoms.

anxietyAnxiety can come from a number of places and each individual as their own triggers. This may be speaking in front of a large group of people, taking exams, trying to make new friends, or trying to plan your future. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by an excessive, uncontrollable worry about everyday things. The focus of worry is typically on issues such as jobs, finances, and health but can also include more mundane things like being late for appointments. In addition, the focus of worry can shift over time.

Physical symptoms of anxiety can include:

  • Muscle tension
  • Sweating
  • Nausea
  • Cold, clammy hands
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Jumpiness
  • Gastrointestinal discomfort or diarrhea
  • Feelings of “being on the edge”
  • Tiredness
  • Trouble sleeping

If you experience these symptoms regularly, for a period of more than a few months, if accompanied by panic attacks, or if they are interfering with the everyday functions and activities in you life you should seek professional help.
