Most overweight people should lose weight gradually (about 2 pounds per week) to protect their body and keep it healthy. Losing even 5-10% of your weight has been proven to improve your health.

Weight is influenced by the amount and type of food that you eat, your exercise level, your genetics, your age, and your health status. Any successful weight loss plan should take into consideration these factors.

Dieting

47% of students have been on a diet.

  • Among these students, 30% were currently on a diet at the time of the survey

Often, the methods that our students rely on to maintain or lose weight have the potential to damage health both in the short and long-term.  For example, students often report fasting for extended periods of time, inducing vomiting, taking diet pills or laxatives, or exercising to excess.

If you want to lose weight:

  • Check with your doctor and make sure that your health status allows you to lower your caloric intake and increase your physical activity.
  • Follow a balanced diet but reduce your calorie intake so that you will lose a pound or two a week.
  • Make time in your day for exercise. You can start by taking the stairs at work or parking in the farthest, instead of closest, parking space and then add some regular activity that you enjoy, like walking.
