Function

To oversee the operation of the Honors Forum; to initiate ideas for student and faculty participation in the program, including development of Honors courses and co-curricular events; to allocate funds in support of the curriculum and co-curricular planning; to collaborate with the Periclean Honors Society in the coordination of the annual Academic Festival; to select the annual Honors Forum faculty lecturer; and to report to CEPP annually on the development of the Honors Forum.

Membership

Four faculty members, with three members to be elected for three-year staggered terms and a fourth to be selected by the Dean of the Faculty to serve as Director for a four-year term; the Associate Dean of the Faculty; the Dean of Studies; the Dean for First-Year Students; two student representatives of the Honors Forum; the vice-president of the Periclean Honors Society; a representative of the Admissions Department (ex-officio).

Operating Procedures

The chair of the Council in cooperation with the Council secretary (and, when appropriate, with the offices of the Dean of Studies)

  • assesses student academic work on a semester basis and oversees student fulfillment of the criteria for continuing membership
  • assesses student applications on a semester basis for membership
  • coordinates with the Admissions Department participation by the Forum in Prospective and Accepted Candidates Days, including the hosting of luncheons with faculty, students and applicants and their families
  • assesses student applications for and work in independent study in Honors Forum courses, in consultation with advising faculty
  • assesses student applications for and work in overseas study in Honors Forum courses, in consultation with advising faculty
  • works with Academic Staff and individual members of the faculty in the development of Honors Forum courses, seeking a balance within and among disciplines
  • coordinates an annual open house (September), an induction ceremony (February), and a faculty lecture (Spring)
  • collaborates with the office of the Dean for First-Year Students and the various honors houses, academic departments and the office of the Dean of the Faculty, and the Student Government Association, in the coordination of Honors Forum (co-)sponsored events
  • collaborates with the Periclean Honors Society in the coordination of the College’s annual Academic Festival.
