Oracle Student System Update
“May you live in interesting times” is attributed to an old Chinese curse. While the origin of the phrase is clouded in mystery, it pretty well sums up the current state of the college’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software. The college selected and implemented the first stages of the Oracle Financial and Human Resources modules in the late 1990’s, and began development work with Oracle on the Oracle Student System (OSS). In the spring of 2005, the college went live with OSS. While we were implementing the product, late in 2004, Oracle acquired PeopleSoft - one of their biggest competitors in the ERP market, and one with a much larger market share in the Higher Education Student System space. This acquisition and merger resulted in a complete evaluation of both the Oracle and PeopleSoft ERP and Student System products, with an eye to consolidating customer base and standardizing support.
We had many questions at the time of that purchase, but it has been only recently that we have been verbally informed of Oracle’s decision to phase out support of OSS over the next five years and to encourage current OSS customers to plan an eventual move to Peoplesoft’s Campus Solutions as an alternative. It is important to note that this news is not yet in writing, so we are proceeding cautiously.
This is a very recent development and will require extensive investigation and analysis before any decisions are made. We will keep you informed as we move forward.
