Wireless at Skidmore

The development of Skidmore’s wireless network began six years ago with a few access points in Scribner Library and Case Center. Over the past three years we have expanded the wireless network to include most areas of campus, excluding the residence halls.

Like most technologies, there have been significant advancements in the world of wireless networking. Over the next few years wireless connection speeds will rival the speeds of current wired networks. We will need to monitor these new wireless standards closely, as there will likely be costs associated with upgrading to these new speeds.

At the moment our investigations are incomplete, as are the adoptions of the new faster standards (such as 11n), so we will progress slowly. It is likely that a project to upgrade the current wireless network will begin next summer. We are working to devise a way to both install a new wireless network and maintain the existing wireless network (for equipment unable to use a faster wireless network).
