During the past academic year a group of administrators and IT staff who are heavily involved in running and using the Oracle Student System (OSS) have been investigating possible future alternatives. You may remember the report in an earlier newsletter on Oracle’s decision to end support of OSS in 2013. Because the support ends only for OSS, we’ve decided to continue using the Oracle software that runs the financials, HR, and payroll applications, and to bridge these applications to a replacement student system.
We have two leading candidates for a student system replacement, Banner from SunGard and Campus Solution from PeopleSoft, which are probably the two most prominent software vendors in the higher education market. The team has seen multiple demonstrations of each product, interviewed consultants, conducted reference calls, and made site visits with comparable schools using the two software systems. During the late spring we had a series of sessions with faculty members to elicit recommendations on what they consider important functionality in this area. Our hope is to have a decision in September and to present it to the board of trustees in October. Upon approval of the decision the planning and implementation of the new system would commence and span a period of 18-24 months with the probable roll out date sometime between 2012 and 2013.
