Migrating Email to the Cloud

There has been a lot of hype and exposure lately about “the cloud”. You cannot turn on a television without seeing people go “to the cloud”. While there is certainly some hype, the college is joining the movement by migrating our e-mail services “to the cloud”.

Starting in early January, we began migrating all current student e-mail into the cloud using the free “Live at EDU” service provided by Microsoft. This service is a state-of-the-art e-mail system that provides an exceptional user experience regardless of the browser, client or access device used. By moving to this service, the college will also avoid a significant cost that would be required if we stayed with an in-house mail server, since it has reached the end of its useful life.  Moving this service to “the cloud” ensures a great user interface, low cost and a much more reliable service than we can provide using our own equipment and resources.

As of right now, all students listed in the class of 2011 – 2015 have been moved to the cloud, along with a small number of staff and faculty members that were involved with the test group. Any new account created going forward will also have their e-mail created in the cloud. Over the next several months, we will continue the migration of the rest of the faculty and staff, so that everyone has the advantages of the cloud service. As schedules are finalized we will send out updates on our progress and status. Any questions, feel free to contact me.
