  • Carnavales del Caribe (2004)
    April 4, 8pm, Emerson Auditorium
Carnival in Puerto Rico, Trinidad & Martinique

This documentary takes us to the carnivals and fiestas of three Caribbean islands--Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Martinica. Each celebration showcases a distinct language and culture, but also the shared syncretic racial, religious and cultural characteristics derived from a common experience of European colonization and African slavery. The music, dances, costumes and communal participation common to these fiestas permit us to appreciate one of the most lively manifestations of Caribbean culture.
  • The American Dream: Puerto Ricans & Mexicans in New York (2003)
April 5, 12:30 pm, Intercultural Center.

This documentary examines two migrant experiences, one from the Caribbean and one from Latin America, which comprise an important part of the Hispanic experience in New York. It addresses issues of cultural identity, racism, discrimination, economic misery, legal vs. undocumented workers, and the political disenfranchisement of Mexicans. While the video discusses shared interests between the two communities, it also reveals tensions between the Caribbean and Latin American immigrants.
