Letter to students from the Mentoring Program Coordinator

The Skidmore Mentoring Program for students majoring in Management and Business matches business students with experienced business professionals in a mentoring relationship and provides students with the opportunity to:

  • Enhance their understanding of the real world of business
  • Link and leverage their classroom learning to the application of this knowledge
  • Enhance their knowledge of career path options and their career relevant skills  (e.g., networking, interviewing, goal-setting, planning)
  • Gain support and guidance from a trusted mentor

The Skidmore Mentoring Program begins with registration in MB 190, Presenting the Brand Called Me.  Only students who enroll in this course will be eligible for the mentoring program.  Please see the course catalogue for a description, or contact me for a copy of the syllabus.  Each student in this course is assigned a mentor, and the mentoring requirements for the course are detailed in the syllabus.  Mentoring relationships that begin in MB 190 are expected to continue for the duration of the student's time at Skidmore or for as long as the relationship is valuable to the student.

Business majors are invited to register for MB 190 in either their junior or senior year.  In some cases, sophmores can register, too.  The sooner a student takes MB 190, the longer his or her mentor relastionship can last.

MB 190 gives the mentoring program structure and discipline.  We have found from experience that this will get students and their mentors off on the best possible footing for a constructive and valuable relastionship.  Beyond our academic tools, the fundamental reasons that mentoring works is the proactive involvement and high level of dedication show by the particpants.  We have been fortunate in recent years to have strong support and commitment from all our mentors, students, and the Management and Business Department faculty.  I invite you to take advantage of this program.

Sincerely,
