||Summer Research & Programs
The Pacific Undergraduate Research Experience in Mathematics (PURE Math) is a summer mathematics enrichment and research program for undergraduates which will be housed in Hilo, Hawaii and funded by the NSF. The program's goal is to increase the number of Pacific Islanders pursuing advanced degrees and careers in the mathematical sciences and I am aware that there is a strong presence of Pacific Islanders at your university.
The PURE Math Program consists of two sub-programs. The PURE Math Internship is a five-week intensive program in which twelve students participate in two advanced mathematics seminars and culminating in mini-projects based on one of the seminar topics. In Summer 2012, the PURE Math Internship learning seminars are "An Introduction to Discrete Morse Theory" and "The Theory of Algebras." The PURE Math Residency is an eight-week intensive undergraduate research program in which twelve more advanced mathematics students engage in open-ended mathematics research projects under the guidance of a well-established research mathematician. In Summer 2012, the PURE Math Residents will work on projects in computational algebraic geometry under the direction of Dr. John B. Little (http://mathcs.holycross.edu/~little/homepage.html).
Please visit our website at http://www2.hawaii.edu/~pure if you would like to find out more about us. You will also find a pdf flyer on the website which helps provide further information for students. We look forward to hearing from you.
