Professor Effinger teaches mathematics in the department.  He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.  Prof. Effinger shares his position in the department with his spouse, Alice Dean, with whom he co-authored a textbook on Structured Programming in BASIC.  His research interests include prime numbers and computational number theory.  He was co-author, with Dr. David Hayes of U. Mass., of the book Additive Number Theory of Polynomials over a Finite Field, published by Oxford University Press, and he wrote a prize-winning paper on using super-computers to study number theory.
