Elective Curricular Paths

Below is a section detailing how students may tailor the basic Neuroscience major's sequence to meet their specific intellectual and professional goals.

Consult the Resources page for Career pathways in neuroscience.

Choosing Electives: Some advice
Students's choices of electives (both within and beyond the requirements specified by the Neuroscience Major) may be guided by interests as well as professional goals. For example, in the Core course Chemical Principles I (CH 105), students are introduced to fundamental concepts of chemistry that are necessary for understanding molecular mechanisms in the neurosciences; students wishing to deepen this understanding are encouraged to take additional courses in Chemistry. Examples in Projected Paths Through the Major below are intended as illustrations of groupings of electives informed by different kinds of interests and goals. For each illustration, suggestions are offered for electives within and beyond the major.

Projected Paths Through the Major

Path 1: A Biobehavioral Focus

Within Major: Consider three electives from the Biology courses (e.g., BI 306, BI 308, BI 316, BI 324, BI 351), and PS 213, PS 304, or PS 306

Beyond Major: Additional electives from such areas as Philosophy, Ethics, Chemistry, and Biology (BI 317 Ecology, BI 343 Molecular Biology, BI 370 Computer Modeling)

Path 2: A Cognitive Neuroscience Focus

Within Major: Consider three electives from the Cognitive Neuroscience courses
(PS 231, PS 312, PS 341) and BI 308 or BI 316

Beyond Major: Additional electives from such areas as Philosophy and Psychology (PS 324 Cognition, PS 325 Perception)

Path 3: A Cognitive Science Focus

Within Major: Consider three electives from the Cognitive Neuroscience courses (PS 231, PS 312, PS 341)

Beyond Major: Consider electives from Anthropology, Philosophy, Computer Science, Psychology (PS 323 Psycholinguistics, PS 324 Cognition, PS 325 Perception) or Interdisciplinary Courses on Cognitive Processes (LS 129)

Path 4: A Developmental Focus

Within Major: Consider as electives, BI 308 Genetics, BI 323 Developmental Biology, and BI 324 Evolution

Beyond Major: Consider electives from Philosophy, Psychology (PS 305 Cognitive Development, PS 312A Infant Development).

Path 5: An Applied Focus

Within Major: Distribute electives equally in Biology and Psychology

Beyond Major: Consider electives from Psychology (PS 326 Health Psychology, PS 315 Clinical Psychology), Sociology or Social Work
