Activities

Carolyn Anderson, Kenan Professor of Liberal Arts and professor of theater, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of the AIDS Council of Northeastern New York.

Ngina Chiteji, associate professor of economics, attended the American Economic Association's Pipeline Conference July 10-12 at the University of California, Santa Barbara.  The pipeline conference is part of the economic discipline's professional association's efforts to encourage undergraduate students to pursue careers in economics.  Chiteji was recently appointed to chair the AEA's Committee on the Status of Minority Groups in the Economics Profession.  She replaces Cecilia Rouse of Princeton, who left the committee to join the Obama administration's Council of Economic Advisors.

David Domozych, professor of biology, and Catherine R. Domozych, senior teaching associate in biology, attended the "Plant Biology 2009" meetings in Honolulu, Hawaii, July 18-22. At this meeting David presented a paper titled "The cell wall polymers of the Charophycean Green Algae: snapshots of the land plant ancestors." Co-authors were Iben Sorensen and William Willats of the University of Copenhagen and Sarah Kiemle and Michael Gretz of Michigan Technological University.

In addition, he was part of three poster presentations at the Gordon Research Conference on "Plant Cell Walls" at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., Aug. 2-7. They included the following: 

-"The cell wall polymers of the Charophycean Green Algae and insights into green plant evolution" with co-presenters Iben Sorensen and William Willats of the University of Copenhagen; 

-"Assessment of Algae and Lower Plant Transcriptome Diversity through Pyrosequencing" with co-presenters, Iben Sorensen and William Willats, University of Copenhagen, and Jocelyn Rose of Cornell University; and 

-"Land plant polymer homologs in primitive true taxa of the charophycean green algae, Chlorokybus atmophyticus and Klebsormidium flaccidum" with co-presenters Sarah Kiemle and Michael Gretz of Michigan Technological University.

Tom Lewis, professor of English, gave a tour of the current Tang Museum exhibition, Lives of the Hudson, and a reading from his book, The Hudson:  A History, Aug. 14 as part of the Adirondack Center for Writing summer program series.

Dan Nathan, associate professor and chair, Department of American Studies, was one of four keynote lecturers at the biennial conference of the Australian Society for Sport History, which took place in Wellington, New Zealand, in early July.  The meeting's theme was "The Cultural Paradigm:  Reinvigorating Sport History?"

Publications, Exhibitions, Performances

Joel Brown, senior artist-in-residence, Department of Music, performed July 9 and 16 at the Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, as part of its "New York City Ballet Musicians & Friends" series of chamber concerts. 

Catherine Domozych, senior teaching associate in biology, and David Domozych, professor of biology, had their photographic image, "The structure and cytochemistry of the cell wall," chosen as the front cover image of the July/August edition of the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology (Vol. 56, No. 4). This image represents a series of light and electron micrographs taken with microscopes of the Skidmore Microscopy Imaging Center.

The Domozychs also are authors of a paper titled "Photosynthetic Eukaryotes of Freshwater Wetland Biofilms: Adaptations and Structural Characteristics of the Extracellular Matrix in the Green Alga, Cosmarium reniforme (Zygnematophyceae, Streptophyta)" in the Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, (Vol. 56, No. 4).

David Domozych also published a paper, "Cell-wall development and bipolar growth in the desmid Penium margaritaceum (Zygnematophyceae, Streptophyta). Asymmetry in a symmetric world." in the August edition of the Journal of Phycology (Vol. 45). Co-author was Laura Lambiasse, Skidmore Class of 2007.

Jill Linz, senior teaching associate, Chemistry, is co-author of The Macroscope, the first in a series of books that imaginatively introduces scientific concepts to young readers.  Her co-author is Cindy Schwarz of Vassar College; publisher is Small World Books.

In the News

Sandy Baum, professor of economics, was interviewed for "Study Shows Rise in Average Borrowing by Students," published Aug. 12 in The New York Times.  In addition, she was a source for "Up to Their Ears—The bottom line for recession refugees:  grad school and debt," published July 26 in Education Life, a New York Times supplement.

Ian Berry, Malloy Curator of the Tang Museum, was interviewed Aug. 5 about the museum's new exhibition, Lives of the Hudson, on the "Round Table," a morning talk show airing on WAMC-FM, the Albany-based public radio affiliate.

Joel Brown, senior artist-in-residence, Music, was the subject of a feature story, "Bridging the Gap—Globe-trotting guitarist an ambassador of music," published July 26 in The Saratogian.

Tom Lewis, professor of English, was interviewed by Vermont Public Radio July 7 for a story on the "Henry Hudson Quadricentennial."  To listen, click here

Mary C. Lynn, professor of American studies, was a source for a story titled "Summer of '69:  Civil Rights," published Aug. 20 in The Troy Record.

Mike Profita, director of career services, was a source for a story titled "Great expectations vs. job market," published Aug. 12, and "Crowded field for jobs at Spa," published July 15.  Both stories appeared in the Albany Times Union.

Gordon Thompson, professor of music, participated in two radio interviews this summer.  On Aug 8, he was a guest for two hours on WCBN-FM in Ann Arbor.  On July 28, he discussed the White Album by the Beatles in a segment on ABC Classic FM, Australia's premier cultural radio network.

Nancy Walker, administrative assistant, Management and Business, was featured in a "People" profile titled "At home with music:  Nancy Walker stays true to her folksy self" in the July issue of Spirit of Saratoga, the arts magazine published by The Saratogian newspaper.  The story focused on recent area performances by Walker.
