Steven Millhauser gave a reading Oct. 15 at Paul Smith's College as part of the Adirondack Center for Writing's Visiting Author Series. 

Sue Van Hook, senior teaching associate, Department of Biology, launched the Fall Visual Arts Lecture Series at Bennington College Sept. 22 with a presentation titled "Design in Nature." She spoke about the importance of looking to nature for efficient designs that have been evolutionarily tested.  Fungi were predominantly featured for their ability to act as a natural, non-toxic resin to bind agricultural waste products into new biodegradable composite materials.

Jan Vinci, senior artist-in-residence, Department of Music, opened the season of the Greater Cleveland Flute Society with a recital and master class Oct. 18.  The program included "Fantasie" by George Hue, "Black Anemones" by Joseph Schwantner, "Theme and Variations on Nel Cor Piu" by Theobald Boehm, "Mei" by Kauo Fukushima, and "Lullaby for Two Flutes and Piano" by Jennifer Higdon.  Eric Charnofsky provided piano accompaniment and flutist Mary Kay Fink of the Cleveland Orchestra performed with Vinci on the Higdon lullaby.
