Women’s soccer takes Liberty League lead in busy weekend

Women's soccer remained perfect in league play with a 1-0 victory Saturday over regional rival Union College.  Freshman Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) set up sophomore Elena Stansky (Worcester, Mass.) for the game-winning goal with 1:08 remaining.  Sophomore keeper Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) was strong in net, making four saves for her seventh shutout of the season.  Skidmore is in first place in the league at 5-0 and 11-2-1 overall.

Field hockey wrapped up a perfect week with dominating victories over Castleton and Morrisville.  Junior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) tallied two goals and an assist in the 6-1 victory at Castleton and added two more goals in Friday's 5-0 win over Morrisville.  Junior Brittany O'Brien (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored three goals in the two games and freshman Ceilidh MacNeill (Framingham, Mass.) scored a goal in both games for the Thoroughbreds.  They improved to 10-3 and travel Saturday to Geneva to face William Smith.

Golf finished the fall season with at 14-stroke victory at the NYU/Manhattanville Golf Classic.  Skidmore shot a 296 led by senior Chris DeJohn's (Rocky Hill, Conn.) four-under 68, four strokes ahead of NYU's Andres Thoma.  Freshman Anthony Dilisio (Swampscott, Mass.) finished third, shooting a 73.

Women's tennis had a strong showing at this weekend's NYS Championships at Ithaca College.  Freshman Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and senior Dani Fancher (St. Louis, Mo.) each won their singles brackets.  Mendoza defeated Joy Backer of Vassar 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 to win the third singles bracket and Fancher beat Vassar's Elizabeth Anderson 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 to win the fourth singles.  Mendoza also combined with senior Danika Robison (South Burlington, Vt.) to reach the finals of the first doubles bracket but fell to Backer/Pontee of Vassar 8-6.

Men's soccer used goals from three different players to defeat New Paltz and finish 1-1 on the week. Junior Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.), sophomore Tim Lueders-Dumont (Lincoln, Vt.) and freshman Aaron Krepack (Mill Valley, Calif.) all scored for the Thoroughbreds in their 3-1 victory at New Paltz.  Sophomore Diego Reinero (Princeton, N.J.) scored and classmate Lucas Millington (Chatham Center, N.Y.) made 11 saves in Skidmore's 2-1 loss at Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts.  The Thoroughbreds host Hobart at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Volleyball went 1-1 at this weekend's Sage Invite.  After a 3-1 (23-25,25-19,25-18,26-24) loss against Brockport, the Thoroughbreds came back strong with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-23, 25-21) victory over the host Sage College.  Junior Meredith Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) averaged 11 kills and four blocks and sophomore Kelley Vershbow (Washington, D.C.) averaged 12 kills over the two matches.  Skidmore is now 17-6 and will host the Skidmore Classic this weekend and will participate in "Dig Pink," an event that uses volleyball to help raise funds for breast cancer victims and survivors. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
