2 fall teams bound for playoffs

Skidmore's women's soccer and field hockey teams are heading for the playoffs following a winning weekend.

Women's soccer clinched second seed–its highest ever–in the Liberty League and will host a first-round playoff game.  Skidmore played William Smith to a 0-0 tie Saturday and fell 1-0 Sunday to Hamilton. Sophomore goalie Meghan Sleezer (Gloversville, N.Y.) recorded two saves Saturday for her eighth shutout of the season and stopped six shots against Hamilton.  The Thoroughbreds are now 11-3-2 and will host Hamilton at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the first round of the Liberty League playoffs.

Field hockey clinched a share of the regular-season Liberty League title with two more wins this weekend.  Skidmore defeated William Smith 2-1 on Saturday behind goals from junior Christine Kemp (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) and senior Casey Tang (Columbia, Md.).  Junior Brittany O'Brien (Ridgefield, Conn.) scored two goals and assisted on the other two in Sunday's 4-3 victory over Rochester.  The Thoroughbreds are now 12-3 with a 6-1 record in the league and a three-way tie for first place.  Seedings for the conference tournament are yet to be determined based on the remainder of the schedule for all three teams.  Skidmore travels to Hartwick Wednesday, Oct. 28, and will play the final regular-season home game Saturday against Utica College.

Volleyball finished 3-1 this weekend at the Skidmore Classic.  The Thoroughbreds defeated Hunter 3-0, Colby-Sawyer 3-2, and St. Michael's 3-1, but fell 3-1 in a hard fought match against Clarkson. Senior Lauren Dinsdale (Harrington Park, N.J.) was selected to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 31.5 digs per match.  Skidmore will host the Skidmore Invitational this Friday and Saturday, Oct. 30 and 31, and will open at 4 p.m. Friday against Plattsburgh.

Men's soccer finished 1-1 this weekend, highlighted by Saturday's 1-0 upset over 20th ranked Hobart.  Freshman Aaron Krepack (Mill Valley, Calif.) scored the game-winner with 27 seconds remaining and sophomore goalie Nick Peterson (West Hartford, Conn.) recorded six saves in the victory.  The Thoroughbreds fell 2-1 to Hamilton in overtime on Sunday.  Junior Doug Yeates (Richmond, Vt.) scored the lone goal for Skidmore.  The team will travel to Burlington, Vt., Tuesday, Oct. 27, to face Southern Vermont.

Men's and women's swimming and diving dropped their meets to St. Lawrence this weekend.  Senior Sonia Segal-Smith (Needham, Mass.) was a triple winner on the women's side, finishing first in the 200 free, 100 free and 200 breast.  Senior Tom Saglimbeni (West Hampton Bays, N.Y.) and sophomore Doug Pilawa (Chardon, Ohio) each won two events on the men's side.  Saglimbeni won the 50-yard freestyle and 200 butterfly while Pilawa won both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.  Skidmore will host Potsdam at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
