International Education Week


~ NOVEMBER 14-18, 2011 ~

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that endeavors to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

OCSE and other campus groups host several events during this important week to promote international education. Schedule of events to be determined. 

If you are interesting in holding an event during IEW, please contact Eliza Camire in Off-Campus Study & Exchanges.

Here is this year's tentative schedule (additional events to be added):

Monday, November 14
  • Study Abroad Fair for Skidmore Programs, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. (Case Center at the Information Desk)
  • After Putin: Putin?, 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. (ICC Lounge)
    A discussion about contemporary Russian politics with Washington Post Moscow Bureau Chief Kathy Lally and Washington Post Moscow Correspondent and 1998 Pulitzer Prize Winner Will Englund, led by Kate Graney, Associate Professor of Government.
  • International Food Festival, 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (The Spa)

Tuesday, November 15

  • Post-Grad International Opportunities Panel, 5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (Bolton 280)
    Come learn about different international options available to you after Skidmore. The panel will include representatives from Teach in China, Peace Corps, Fulbright, and Megan Jackson from Career Services followed by time for questions and refreshments.
  • Skidmore in China (Beijing and Shanghai) Interest Meeting, 5:00 p.m. (Starbuck 202)
  • SkiDaiko Takio lesson, 8:00 p.m. (Wilson Chapel)
Wednesday, November 16
  • Passport Day
    11:00 p.m.-2:00 p.m. (Case Center, Outside of Skidmore Shop)
    Submit or renew your passport application. Representatives from the Post Office will be on hand to take passport pictures and collect passport applications. Applicants must bring evidence of U.S. citizenship, a current form of identification, and the application fee.   • Live Indian Music featuring the Sitar & Tabla, 6:30 p.m (The Spa)
  • OPT, CPT, EAD: WTF?!, 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m (ICC Lounge)
    A primer on off-campus employment and internship authorization for students at Skidmore on an F-1 student visa.
  • Skidmore in London Interest Meeting, 5:00 pm (Ladd 206)
Thursday, November 17

  • Davis Project for Peace information table, 11:30-1:30pm (Atrium)
  • "Writer's Workshop" for International and ESL Writers, 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m. (Harder 108)
  • Guest Lecture by founder of Jeneba Project
    6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. (Emerson)
  • Latino Banquet, 5:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (The Tang)
    The Latino Banquet will offer Latin food catering from the Dining Hall, a music band, an alumna speaker, and an overall great experience.The event is formal.
Friday, November 18
  • ISU Talent show, 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m. (locatioin TBD)

  • Virtual Photo Gallery
    As part of International Education Week, Off-Campus Study & Exchanges has also created a VIRTUAL PHOTO GALLERY of select images from the 2011 OCSE Photo Contest. The virtual photo gallery will open on Monday, November 14th.

• International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education that provides an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

• IEW was first held in 2000 and today, is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.

• According to Open Doors, 241,791 U.S. students studied abroad in 2006/07.

Skidmore College is ranked 14th in the U.S. in the list of Top 40 Baccalaureate Institutions (Carnegie Type) by Total Number of Students Studying Abroad.

• International education prepares U.S. citizens to live, work, and compete in the global economy.

• International education is also a vital service industry, contributing more than $15.5 billion to the U.S. economy.
