International Education Week

International Education Week is a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education that endeavors to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn, and exchange experiences in the United States. It is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

OCSE and other campus groups host several events during this important week to promote international education.  

Here is this year's schedule:

Monday, November 16

  • Fair Trade Sale, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

  • Study Abroad Fair for Skidmore Programs, 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

  • Skidmore in Beijing Information Session, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m., Bolton 101
Tuesday, November 17

  • Paris Fall Seminar Information Session, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Bolton 103

  • Teach in China Info Session, 7:00 p.m. Ladd 106.
    The Teach In China program offers Skidmore graduates a year long, paid professional teaching opportunity at a provincial university in Shandong province in eastern China.
Wednesday, November 18
  • Get-a-Passport Drive, 12:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m., Case Center, Outside of Skidmore Shop.
    Submit or renew your passport application. Representatives from the Post Office will be on hand to take passport pictures and collect passport applications. Applicants must bring evidence of U.S. citizenship, a current form of identification, and the application fee.   • Skidmore in Spain (Madrid and Alcalá) Information Session, 5:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m., Ladd 206.
  • Using your Study Abroad as a Building Block for Your Career, 7:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Career Services, Starbuck Center on the 2nd floor. Career Services and OCSE host a Question & Answer discussion to discuss international opportunities and how to highlight your study abroad experience to potential employers and graduate schools.
Thursday, November 19
  • Fulbright Information Session, 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m., Conference Room, Starbuck Center, 2nd floor.
    Fulbright grants offer opportunities for either graduate study or teaching assistantships in foreign countries following graduation. Prof. Maria Lander will discuss how to apply, the eligibility requirements, and examples of Skidmore students who have received grants in the past. 
  • China Culture Table, 12:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

  • Shakespeare Programme Information Session, 5:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. Bolton 100.
  • Skidmore in London Information Session 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Bolton 100.
  • Davis Projects for Peace Presentation, 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. Ladd 206. "Peace Through My Eyes".
    Elana Hazghia '10 will present on her co-project with Verena Bunge '11 in Guatemala during the summer of 2009. The project created art and photography programs teaching students basic skills that culminated in four photo exhibitions in Guatemala and the United States.
  • Latino Banquet hosted by Raices, 7:00 pm. Payne Room of the Tang Museum.
    Celebrate Latino/a Heritage Month with Raices at their annual Latino Banquet featuring a keynote speaker, entertainment and food from various Latino cultures. This event is a formal dinner. Please RSVP to Altagracia Montilla (amontill@skidmore.edu).
  • Classical Indian Music, 7:00 p.m. The Spa in Case Center.
    Professor Veena Chandra will play and sing some classical devotional songs and play Indian classical music on Sitar, accompanied on Tabla by Devesh Chandra.
Friday, November 20
  • SIT Interest Meeting, 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm, Saratoga Room, Case Center (near the Spa).
    Karen Kray, a representative from SIT, the School for International Training, will be available to answer questions about the off-campus study program options through SIT.  Students can stop by anytime between 12:00 - 1:30 pm. Saturday, November 21
  • Skidaiko Japanese Drumming Club, “Stories from Japan,” 10:00 p.m. Filene Music Building.
    "Stories from Japan" will be a performance consisting of 4 taiko pieces brought over from Osaka, Japan. Each new work is an original creation of the Japanese drumming group Wadaiko Miyabi and has been personally passed down to Skidaiko. This event will be the first in America to showcase their compositions.

  • Virtual Photo Gallery
    As part of International Education Week, Off-Campus Study & Exchanges has also created a VIRTUAL PHOTO GALLERY of select images from the 2009 Skidmore Global Visions Photo Contest administered by OCSE. OCSE received over 140 photos from students that studied off-campus during the 2008-09 academic year.

• International Education Week (IEW) is a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education that provides an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide.

• IEW was first held in 2000 and today, is celebrated in more than 100 countries worldwide.

• According to Open Doors, 241,791 U.S. students studied abroad in 2006/07.
