• The Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation Act of 2007 (H.R. 1469, S.991) is a visionary bill to address today’s need for more Americans to know more about the rest of the world as a basic part of their undergraduate education. The concept of the legislation is based on the vision of the late distinguished Senator Paul Simon (D-IL) and establishes the recommendations put forth by the Commission on the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program. This legislation creates a national program that will establish study abroad as the norm, not the exception, for undergraduate students. This legislation, once signed into law, will authorize the creation of the Senator Paul Simon Study Abroad Foundation and will define the goals and objectives of the study abroad program.**

• Members of the Skidmore College community, through the organization of the Department of Education, contribute locally to the efforts and goals of international education via a program called the Amsterdam English Language Learners Program, located in Amsterdam, NY only 30 miles from Saratoga Springs. The Amsterdam English Language Learners Program provides a comprehensive English language learning/family literacy initiative for Latino, European, and Indian families. Its overall goal is to enhance the lives of Latinos (and immigrants from other countries) in the city by providing English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction; personal, cultural, and political empowerment through language learning; and the cultivation of intercultural understanding.

• Since the program’s inception, numerous Skidmore students, representing a broad range of majors and minors (i.e., Education, International Affairs, foreign languages, Anthropology, Law and Society) have participated in the program through internships and volunteer work. More information can be found on the Skidmore Dept. of Education Web site, and by contacting Prof. Lenora de la Luna (Education) at ext. 5147 or via e-mail.
