Faculty Resources Program Opportunities
Paris Fall SeminarDirector
The Paris Fall Seminar offers a unique opportunity that is
accessible to Skidmore faculty from across the campus. It allows faculty to
develop and deliver a program in Paris, in
English, which is specific to their area of expertise and that utilizes the
resources of Paris
to advance the purposes of the curriculum. The program, delivered annually
during the fall semester, offers two courses that are tailored to the
discipline of the Skidmore faculty member and two additional
courses that focus on French language and culture. The program is meant to
provide an opportunity for students with little or no French, who would not
otherwise have the chance, to participate in a program in Paris. With this Seminar, we see the
opportunity to offer students and faculty from a variety of disciplines a
focused academic experience and to internationalize the curriculum while
promoting the study of a foreign language. It also gives faculty the
opportunity to incorporate a more global perspective into their course work
upon returning to Skidmore.
Past and planned Paris Fall Seminar topics include Ecstasy: Thinking and the Arts in 20th
Century Paris (Reg Lilly – Philosophy); Paris Inside Out: History &
Travel in the "City of Light" (Jordana Dym – History); Icons of
French Culture (Patty Han – French); Paris
and Its Margins (Hédi Jaouad – French); Writing Paris (Linda Simon –
English); and Democracy Through An Aristocrat's Eyes (Tim Burns - Government).
OCSE will announce Paris Fall Seminar openings as they arise. For
information about the program and responsibilities of the Seminar Director, or for any
questions about the application guidelines, please see the links to the right,
or feel free to write to me.
We look forward to many exciting years to come with this
program. It is truly an exciting and engaging experience for all faculty and students who particiapate.
