University College London

street sceneSituated in central London, University College London (UCL) is part of the University of London and has a distinguished history and strong academic tradition. Founded in 1826, UCL is one of Britain’s premier universities and offers unrivaled opportunities for study and research. Surrounded by museums, theaters, cinemas, and major art galleries, UCL is an easy walk to the cultural and social life of this capital city.

UCL also boasts an active student life on campus. The student union offers cafes, game rooms, special interest and political clubs, a flourishing drama group with performances at the semi-professional Bloomsbury Theater, and extensive sporting facilities. Approximately one-third of the 22,000 students enrolled at UCL are from one of 140 different foreign countries. All students are fully integrated into UCL’s classes and housing and work to the same challenging standards as their British counterparts.

Academics

UCL is a very competitive institution that offers our students an academically challenging semester. The course work consists of a series of lectures, seminars, and tutorials. Emphasis is placed on the independent work of students outside their classes, which includes research and writing on topics of discussion. This system is very different from the one our students are used to. However, a motivated student will find this system quite rewarding.

Skidmore program participants choose courses (or "modules") from one of the following departments: anthropology, archeology, art history, biology, chemistry, classics, computer science, earth science, European cultural studies, geography, Hebrew and Jewish studies, history, languages and linguistics, mathematics, philosophy, psychology, Slavonic and East European studies, and Spanish and Latin American studies.

NOTE: Due to the competitive nature and high entrance standards at UCL, students should have a GPA of 3.3 or higher. The Art and English departments have limited access for study abroad students. Students wishing to take courses in these departments should have a GPA higher than 3.3. To determine which specific modules are available to our students, please contact Skidmore’s Office of Off-Campus Study & Exchanges.

Housing

UCL provides accommodation in the form of student houses and residence halls. Most residences are within walking distance of the university. There is no guarantee that all students will be offered university housing. If a student is not able to obtain UCL housing, Skidmore will secure and finance an alternate living arrangement.

Program Dates

The program at UCL, offered only in the SPRING SEMESTER, consists of two terms. The first term runs from early January through late March and is followed by a month-long break. The second term begins in late April with exams ending as late as mid-June. Our students attend both sessions and take exams as scheduled in June. Please note: Some departments will schedule exams much earlier than June. Exams schedules will not be posted until after students arrive in London. While some departments may finish course and related coursework earlier, the program does not end until UCL's semester is over.
