Housing and Such
Students will live in the IES Residence Hall with American study abroad students and international students. The residence hall offers students a safe, modern space in which to live. It is located on King’s Road in Chelsea, one of London’s most sought-after residential areas, and is a 25- to 40-minute commute by bus or subway to the IES Center. The residence hall is home to students from more than 30 countries; the goal is to house 50% IES study abroad students and 50% international and British students. This allows our first-year students to interact with students from all over the world on a daily basis. |
Students will be housed in double rooms and will have private baths, in-room access to telephones, and free Web service. They will also have access to a full kitchen and a common area lounge with a television, DVD players, and additional data ports for laptop hookups. As there is no meal plan students will be provided with a stipend to cover meals and subway passes. There are grocery stores within walking distance of the residence hall, as well as a variety of cafés and restaurants. (Please note that the living stipend is meant to cover most meals and public transportation. However, students should budget some personal funds to cover eating out, taking taxis, and other incidentals.) |
Through the IES Center and residence hall, students will have access to full time student services personnel 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The IES Center has a staff of nine, including an assistant director who oversees student services and support. The residence hall has a staff of twelve, including a managing director, a director of student life, and five resident assistants. The IES staff plan a variety of activities throughout the semester; some are linked directly to the courses students are taking and others are simply social gatherings. We encourage students to take advantage of as many of these activities as possible. |
![]() The IES residence hall also has a full time security staff. Students must show ID to enter the building; guests must be signed in and out and are expected to vacate the premises by midnight. These se-curity measures help ensure that students are safe within their living environment.
Keeping Healthy Our students’ health is very important. For that reason, Skidmore provides basic international health insurance coverage. If a student should have a medical issue during the semester abroad, the staff at IES and Skidmore’s faculty directors will help facilitate medical referrals. |
