Scribner Seminar, London FYE 2013
Bloomsbury and Its Surroundings
Tom Lewis, Professor of English
For centuries the Bloomsbury area of London has enjoyed a rich cultural history. It has been home to Virginia Woolf, Charles Dickens, William Butler Yeats, Sylvia Plath, and many other writers; it boasts the University of London, British Museum, and British Library, as well as smaller museums devoted to medicine, Egyptology, architecture, and toys; and Bloomsbury is the site of quiet city squares surrounded by superb Georgian buildings, as well as the unexpected delights of contemporary London. Seminar students will study this unique area and its changes over the centuries, in the context of English and European history, art history, and literature. They will develop independent (but supervised) projects based upon their interests. |
