The Program
The Skidmore in Spain program, founded in 1985, is run in conjunction with Tufts University. This challenging program is designed for students with an advanced knowledge of Spanish and strives to integrate students into the life of Madrid through courses at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM), the experience of a family stay, and an emphasis on involvement in the cultural and social life of Madrid. At the UAM, Skidmore program participants join native Spanish students in their courses, choosing from classes in the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences. Course work in natural sciences is available to advanced majors in the field. Students also take selected courses at the Skidmore Center.
The Skidmore program is limited to 20 students, who are joined by 20 students from Tufts. Preference is given to students enrolling for the full academic year; however; we do accept students on a space-available basis for the spring semester only.
Internships are available during the second semester for qualified full-year students. Skidmore interns have been placed in private businesses, museums, theaters, media organizations, government agencies, and non-governmental organizations.
![]() The Program Center A home base for our students, the program center is situated in the cultural center of Madrid on Calle Recoletos, close to the Biblioteca Nacional, the Parque del Buen Retiro, and the Museo del Prado. The center houses Skidmore's administrative offices, classrooms for program courses, study rooms, computer and video facilities, and a small library to supplement the UAM facilities. Skidmore in Madrid is staffed by a director, an assistant director, and two coordinators, all of whom are there to assist our students in their adjustment and to offer our students support in their studies, including tutorial services. Program Dates As mentioned, Skidmore in Madrid is primarily intended as a yearlong program. However, we will accept participants for the spring semester on a space-available basis. Please keep in mind that the program follows the academic calendar of the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, which is not compatible with the traditional American college calendar. The return date in the spring will depend on each student's exam schedule. The following dates should be considered when making your plans.
