Art History - Arts & Business

This is an historical sampling of course descriptions for art history courses that have been taken by previous program participants outside of the Skidmore Center. This list should be used as a guide. Courses listed are not guaranteed to be offered during your semester in Paris and require department approval at Skidmore. Typically, there is one Art History course offered at the Skidmore Center each semester.

JPAH355 PARIS ART AND ARCHITECTURE FROM 1750 TO THE PRESENT (3)
(Skidmore in Paris)

This course deals with the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, and their legacies, which constitute most of what we see around us in Paris today by interweaving an investigation of the city's development with a history of French architecture. The study of major monuments will include a survey of the art of their period. We will study key monuments on-site. Knowledge of French history is helpful, and a good pair of walking shoes indispensable. This course provides a thorough knowledge of the history of the city and its architecture during the periods studied.

JPAH251C SPECIAL TOPICS IN ART HISTORY (3)

(Studio Vermès – History of Photography in France)

Objectives:

  • Introduce students to the beginnings of photography: material, equipment and processes
  • Examine photography as both a consequence of scientific and technological developments and as an invention of a new form of artistic expression
  • Develop and refine the ability to look and interpret an image
  • Perceive the relationships between previous photographic movements and current directions in photography (portraiture, urban and rural landscapes, social documentary, advertising and fashion)
