The Program

The 2012 Institute will be held July 29 - August 4. Open to flutists of intermediate to professional levels, the program welcomes high school, college, and adult students. This concentrated program offers master classes, ensemble rehearsals, private lessons, and recitals. The week’s highlights include master classes by Jan Vinci, Jeffrey Khaner, Mark Vinci, and other members of the Flute Institute faculty.

The day begins with a warm-up session covering the fundamentals of playing and yoga exercises designed for flutists. Interactive sessions include Baroque Flute, Mock Auditions, Yoga for Flutists and Technology and Practice and Performance. Morning master classes focus on particular styles: classical, baroque, French, contemporary (including avant-garde), and solo flute repertoire. Afternoon master classes cover open repertoire, as well as one special class on jazz improvisation. Performance opportunities for flutists include master classes, two solo recitals, and a closing ensemble concert. A trip to the historic Saratoga Race Course and a performance of the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center round out the experience. Students may register for master classes and choose their performance repertoire. Master class participation, ensemble placement, and repertoire will be confirmed by the director.

"Coming to the Institute was truly a life changing experience for me. It helped me build confidence in my own playing and realize that I do have a chance to make it as a professional flute player. It opened my eyes to a wonderful world of music I never knew existed."

“This program exposed me to great flute playing. I came home with many new ideas and things to work on. The private lessons were great. I loved the week at the SSFI and I’m so glad I went!”
