Summer Studio Art Program at Skidmore College

Session 1: June 1 - July 2, 2009
Session 2: July 7 - August 7, 2009

The Skidmore Summer Studio Art Program features a diverse array of distinctive courses and programs that make for a dynamic and productive environment for creative artists.  The studios in Saisselin Art Building are busy all summer long with art faculty, visiting artists, and students at all levels and with a wide range of interests, all coming together in one place to share with each other and to grow and learn. The Program aims to meet the needs of serious artists – beginners and experienced alike – eager to develop their skills and expand their creative horizons. To accomplish this, the Program takes full advantage of the college's exceptional studios, faculty and the resources of the campus and the Saratoga Springs community.

Across two five-week sessions, the Program offers courses and workshops in a wide variety of disciplines and levels.

  • Summer Termfor College students The art department offers college students the opportunity to study in many of the core areas of the Studio Arts. Several Special Topics courses also offer not-to-be-missed opportunities for specialized study.

  • Pre-College Program in the Liberal and Studio Arts offers High School students the opportunity for intensive study in the studio arts in this five week summer program.
  • Visting Artists: Each year the Skidmore Summer Studio Art Program brings renowned artists from diverse disciplines to lecture on their work. Past visiting artists have included Jake Berthot, Chuck Close, Janet Fish, Eric Fischl, April Gornick, John McQueen, Duane Michals, Philip Pearlstein, Joan Synder, Nancy Spero, Toshiko Takaezu, and Terry Winters. More recently artists like Terry Adkins, Jeffrey Shapiro, Martin Weinstein, and Polly Apfelbaum have infused the studios with their creative energies and shared their work with faculty and students.   These top visiting artists - and nationally recognized faculty, numerous special events, and a multifaceted group of talented students - is what rests at the core of the Summer Studio Art Program's dynamic learning environment.

Jessica Stockholder, this year's featured Visiting Artist, is an internationally known artist whose work can not be easily placed in any single art category. Stockholder's artwork is a colorful and exuberant hybrid of sculpture, painting, and assembledge. She has received numerous grants including the Lucelia Artist Award from the Smithsonian American Art Museum, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and several grants from the Canada Council. Appointed to the Yale University faculty in 1999, Stockholder is currently professor and director of graduate studies in sculpture. She will be at Skidmore in July.

The Schick Art Gallery hosts exhibits of visiting artists throughout the summer and, along with the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery is a destination for summer visitors.

Our Community Education Program offers the community the opportunity to engage in non-credit evening studio art classes.
