Frequently Asked Questions
Where on campus do Skidmore and visiting college students live in the summer? Scribner Village. The residence halls and Northwoods Apartments are filled all summer long with participants in other programs sponsored by the College and several conference groups. Who is eligible for Scribner Village student summer housing? Summer student housing is available to students who are enrolled in Skidmore College Summer Term classes, conducting on-campus research sponsored by a faculty member, employed at least half-time in an on-campus job, or are participating in a Skidmore sponsored internship in the local area. When can I move in? When do I have to leave? When you move in and out depends on why you are here, as the dates of your housing must correspond with the dates of your course enrollment, research, internship or employment. For the most part these activities coincide with the 10 weeks of the Summer Term calendar: housing for Session 1 opens May 31 and ends July 3: for Session 2 housing opens on July 6 and ends August 8. Of course, if you are here for both sessions you can remain in your room in between the two. If I am already living in Scribner Village can I just stay where I am? Sorry, no. All students are required to leave campus at the end of the Spring semester and cannot return to campus until May 31. Facilities Services needs to be able to get into every residential space on campus to clean it, repair it and prepare for the next resident. If I'm going to be living in Scribner Village in the Fall, can I move into my apartment during the Summer? Sorry, again no and for the same reason. Students are required to leave campus no later than August 23 as Facilities Services needs to be able to get in to every residential space on campus to clean it, repair and prepare for the next resident. Can I leave my things in my room until I come back for Summer Term? Is summer storage available? Students must remove their belongings from their Spring semester housing so that the room can be cleaned and prepared for summer guests. Items may not be stored in your new summer room assignment until your day of arrival to allow us time to clean and prepare the room for your arrival. Storage is available ONLY for the two-week break between spring semester and the start of Summer Term for students living on campus during the summer. If you would like to store any items temporarily you must fill out a Storage Release Form and return it to Wendy LeBlanc in the Special Program Office. Can I choose who I live with? Yes. If you know other students who will also be applying for Summer housing and with whom you want to share an apartment, follow the instructions on the application for groups. We will try, so far as we are able, to group students in apartments according to their requests and to provide single rooms for all students. We are more likely to be able to accommodate requests when all students in a group are staying on campus during the same time period. Given the limited supply of apartments, if demand requires it we may have to assign two people to double rooms and to add residents to apartments. What if I do not yet have a suitemate? You will be assigned to an apartment with other students. What about my meal plan? If you have purchased the meal plan, when you pick up your key at Case Desk be sure to have your Skidmore ID validated for meals. If you attend another institution, you will be provided with a Skidmore Summer ID. ID's serve as meal cards for those who have purchased meal plans and must be presented at all College meals. (Access to some campus facilities may also require showing the ID.) With the full meal plan you will have access to three meals per day - 1 breakfast (7:00 am - 11:00 am), 1 lunch (11:00 am - 4:00 pm), and 1 dinner (5:00 pm - 7:00 pm). Meals must be taken in the noted hours. You can not swipe your card twice for the same meal in one day or the cost of the meal will be deducted from your declining balance card (ID card). If you do not have money on your ID card then the swipe will be denied and you will not be able to access the dining hall. What if you don't want the full meal plan? Your ID is also a debit card, so you can put any amount of money on it you choose and pay for meals as you need them. Please refer to the Summer Information Guide for more information. What does it cost to live on campus in the Summer? Students enrolled in courses and in internships? Room only, per week: $175 Summer Faculty Research Students - Room and Board is paid for by the research grant for research period only. Summer Employees - Rate reduced by the College for students working in on campus jobs at least half time. Room only, per week: $52.50 Why do students working on campus pay less for Summer housing? Because the salaries for Summer jobs are typically insufficient to meet the cost of housing (and the cost of Summer housing is the same as that during the Fall and Spring semesters), the College is effectively subsidizing the cost of housing for Summer student employees. We're doing this in order to make it possible for students to take on the work the College needs to get done in the Summer. What if I have a job that's more than half-time but I am also taking classes? You'll pay the lower rate for housing. Case Desk. After you move in to the apartment you can obtain your room key from an RA. No key deposit is necessary but if you do not return your key a $50 charge will be posted to your student account. Arrival time for students is after 3:00 pm (on the confirmed arrival date); departure is not later than 11:00 am on the day of your scheduled departure. Anything else? Students not currently enrolled at Skidmore during the academic year who will be living on campus during the summer must complete a health history form prior to their arrival. Please fill out and send to the Office of the Dean of Special Programs the health form found on this page. As outbreaks of measles and meningitis continue to occur on college campuses, we advise you to check your medical records to ensure that you have received the requisite immunizations. Download it: 2009 Summer Student Housing Application (PDF). All students are required to read the Summer Residential Life Agreement and sign the bottom portion of the housing application that states you abide by these terms.
