Summer Term is administered by the Office of the Dean of Special Programs, located on the 4th Floor of Palamountain Hall. Questions regarding enrollment in Studio Art courses should be directed to Marianne Needham, Program Coordinator, at 580-5052. Questions regarding all other courses may be directed to Darcy Bourassa, Program Coordinator, 580-5592. James Chansky, Director of Summer Sessions and Summer Special Programs in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs, can be reached at 580-5597. All are located in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs.

Skidmore Students and Summer Term
Currently enrolled Skidmore students who are in good standing may register themselves, via the Student Information System, in any Summer Term course provided they meet any relevant pre-requisites. While for the most part the same academic regulations in force during the fall and spring semesters apply to Summer Term courses, given the short sessions some deadlines are different and are noted below.

Student Services
Because Summer Term is an optional term of the college, many of the services provided to students during the fall and spring semesters are not available to students during summer months. The Office of the Dean of Studies, Student Academic Services and some other offices which provide academic support to students during the fall and spring semesters substantially curtail their regular operations in the summer months and for the most part are not available to students. Similarly, those offices providing support to residents during the fall and spring semesters such as Health Services and the Counseling Center are also substantially curtailed during the summer months. Students who require the services of these or any related offices in order to be successful as either students or campus residents are discouraged from enrolling in Summer Term courses, engaging in on-campus activities, or residing on campus during the summer months.

Admission
Enrollment is open to currently enrolled Skidmore students in good standing; to students enrolled and in good standing at other institutions; and to those applicants who, if not currently matriculated, can otherwise demonstrate their qualifications. Students who have been accepted at Skidmore or at another accredited college or university for the fall term, 2009, apply through the Pre-College Program in the Liberal and Studio Arts. For questions regarding eligibility, contact the Director of Summer Sessions and Summer Special Programs.

Acceleration
The College offers students the opportunity to accelerate their progress to degree (and so to graduate early) by enrolling in summer courses.  Details may be found on the Registrar's Information on Acceleration and Application form.

Registration
Students may register for up to eight credit hours in each summer session. Skidmore students must register on-line; students not attending Skidmore must complete an application form and submit it by mail or in person. Registration is open to all students from early spring through June 1 for Sessions 1 & 3, and July 7 for Session 2.  All students are, however, advised to complete their application or registration for Sessions 1 & 3 by May 18 and by June 22 for Session 2: courses that have insufficient enrollments by these dates may be cancelled. Students registered for classes that are cancelled will be notified and arrangements will be made, where possible, to enroll them in other courses.

Independent Study
Skidmore students registering for Independent Study must complete an Independent Study Form (available on-line or in the Registrar’s Office.) This form must be signed by your advisor and instructor and must be submitted to the Registrar’s Office prior to June 1 for Session 1, and July 7 for Session 2.Incomplete forms will not be processed.

Internship Credit
Skidmore students registering for internship credit must complete and submit an Internship for Credit Proposal Form to the Dean of Studies Office for approval before beginning the internship. Forms and information are available at the following link, http://cms.skidmore.edu/dean_of_studies/internships/index.cfm or by stopping by the Dean of Studies Office located in Starbuck Center.

Skidmore will not retroactively approve credit for experiences undertaken without the formal sponsorship and guidance of a Skidmore faculty member and without a completed internship credit proposal submitted to the Dean of Studies Office before the commencement of the internship. Incomplete credit proposals will not be processed. It is important that you have all the necessary approvals.

Deadlines for turning in Summer Internship for Credit proposals for Summer 2009 are as follows:
Session 1:  Friday, May 22
Session 2:  Friday, June 26.

NOTE: Because internships are credit-bearing learning experiences, students registering for summer internships for credit pay the same per-credit tuition and fees as for a standard summer session course.

Grading Options
All courses will be graded A through F, though some offer students the option to take the course on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis. Information on which courses offer this option can be found in the course details on the Master Schedule. The College criterion for Satisfactory is the equivalent of a “C” or better. In some cases, courses counting toward the major may not be taken S/U. Students should check with their major department prior to registering for this option. Choice of grading option must be made at the time of registration. Students may register for no more than one course per session on an S/U basis.

Registration Changes
For the first three days of classes Skidmore students can change their courses or their grading options on-line in the Student Information System; studentsnot matriculating at Skidmore can change their courses or their grading options by completing a Summer Term Change in Course Registration Form (available on-line or in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs).  Students may not register for a course, change a course, or change a grading option after the first three days of class in either session. For specific dates please refer to the 2009 Summer Term Academic Calendar.

Withdrawal
Withdrawal from a course at any point after the third day of class requires the written approval of the instructor. Students may withdraw from a course without incurring a grade penalty if they complete – prior to the end of the fourth week of classes – a Summer Term Withdrawal WITHOUT Grade Penalty Form(available on-line or in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs).  Skidmore students should submit this form to the Registrar’s Office; students who do not attend Skidmore should submit this form to the Office of the Dean of Special Programs. Withdrawal without a grade penalty means that students will receive a “W” (Withdrawal) on their transcripts. At Skidmore “W” is not figured in the calculation of grade point averages. Students withdrawing after the fourth week of classes must submit a Summer Term Withdrawal WITH Grade Penalty Form (available on-line or in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs). Skidmore students should submit this form to the Registrar’s Office; students who do not attend Skidmore should submit this form to the Office of the Dean of Special Programs. Students withdrawing from a course after these dates or at any point without permission of the instructor will receive a grade of “WF” (withdrawn/failing). At Skidmore “WF” grades are figured into calculations of grade point averages as an “F”. For specific dates please refer to the 2009 Summer Term Academic Calendar.

Refunds
All requests for refunds outside the terms set below must be submitted in writing to the Director of Summer Sessions and Summer Special Programs. The refund policy is as follows: 100% of tuition will be refunded to students if, by the end of the third day of class in either session, they complete their course withdrawal on-line (Skidmore students) or complete and submit to the Office of the Dean of Special Programs a Summer Term Change in Course Registration Form (available on-line or in the Office of the Dean of Special Programs). After this point there will be no refund of tuition. 100% of room and board fees will be refunded up to the end of the first day of classes in each session provided students notify the Office of the Dean of Special Programs of their intent not to reside on campus. Withdrawal from housing at any point after the second day of classes in either session will entitle the student to a prorated refund of the unused portion of the board fee only, from the date of withdrawal. Appeals for refunds due to extenuating circumstances may be made in writing to the Dean of Special Programs.

Incompletes
Any incomplete work must be made up no later than six weeks following the end of the session for which the work was due. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the instructor and make arrangements for course completion.

Dismissal
The College reserves the right to dismiss any student who does not meet its academic standards, whose continuation, in the opinion of College authorities, is not contributing to the best development of the student, or whose behavior is inconsistent with the ideals and standards of the College. Any student receiving notice of dismissal shall vacate the College residence within 24 hours and return all college-owned property. Refund of fees for tuition, room, and board will be in accordance with the policy indicated above. Decisions on dismissal are the responsibility of the Dean of Special Programs, made in consultation with the Director of Summer Sessions and Summer Special Programs and other Program Directors as appropriate.

Employees and Employee Dependents
Employees and employee dependents who wish to enroll in summer courses must complete a Skidmore College Internal Tuition Grant Request (available on-line and in the Office of Human Resources) and send it directly to the Office of Human Resources. Employees and employee dependents enrolled in independent study or internship courses are required to pay the cost of the instructor’s salary. As well as application fees, laboratory fees and material fees.
