President Glotzbach
In recent months, the media have devoted considerable attention to the avian flu and the possibility of a pandemic outbreak. Like most of our counterparts across the country, Skidmore is working to develop plans for managing a variety of scenarios if the avian flu arrives in our community. We have assembled a planning committee whose members represent the full range of critical services provided by the College, and we are
monitoring carefully information and guidance provided by the leading public health organizations on the regional, state, and federal levels.

There is virtually no limit to the number of potential scenarios we might face if human-to-human transmission of the avian influenza develops. Our planning will focus first and foremost on what must be done to ensure the health and safety of students, faculty, and staff; it will also consider what role Skidmore might play in the local community and what steps will be required to ensure continuity of the College’s operations.

As our planning progresses, we will communicate important information to key audiences via this Web site and other means. I am confident that should a pandemic outbreak develop, the College will respond with the same competence and compassion it has demonstrated in the face of past emergency situations.

We encourage each of you to become educated about this potential health threat by visiting the Web links listed on this page. Please consider this Web site as a starting point for information on Skidmore’s response to avian flu and revisit this site for updates as events warrant.
