Student Art Exhibition

Posted: 02/23/2011

The annual Skidmore College Student Art Exhibition, sponsored by the college's Studio Art Department, is on display in Schick Art Gallery through Friday, March 11, 2011.

The show invariably celebrates the talent, creativity, and imagination of Skidmore students. Guest juror this year was Rachel Seligman, a 1991 Skidmore graduate who recently rejoined the campus community as associate curator of the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery. Her career has included curatorial positions at the Lake George Arts Project and Union College.

From an average of more than 250 entries in the areas of ceramics, communication design, drawing and painting, electronic media, fiber arts, installation, metals, photography, printmaking, and sculpture, the juror typically chooses one-third to one-quarter for exhibit, and singles out the most outstanding work for special awards.

In her juror’s statement, Seligman noted, “Works that exhibited both a mastery of the medium and an understanding of appropriate presentation stood out the most strongly.”

She added, “For Skidmore student artists, this is a period of artistic experimentation and examination; a time of emulation and of investigation. The most successful works are those that balance proficiency with risk-taking and demonstrate a clearly articulated sensibility. They are the works in which formal and conceptual elements are united with energy, elegance, wit, and intelligence.”

Prizes and gift certificates totaling more than $1,000 are funded annually through donations made by friends of the gallery, campus organizations, and Saratoga community businesses. The following awards were announced at the opening-night reception:
